One of the best parts about traveling or going on a holiday is the food. Some people can even forgive a bad day – as long as they can sample the finest in local cuisine. But finding good restaurants can be tricky. This is especially true if you’re after something traditional.
If you’re in the lovely island of Koh Phangan, you’re never far away from good food. However, if you’re on a strict diet or budget, this might limit your options. To help you out, here’s a list of the best restaurants on Koh Phangan, and why you should try them.
1. Ando Loco Restaurant and Bar
Believe it or not, this place at Thong Sala serves up authentic Mexican cuisine. So if you’re ever in the mood for some enchiladas or burritos, then you know exactly where to go. They also serve up vegetarian and gluten-free options. Try their sweet potato fries or fish tacos if you need a quick break from Thai food. Find a nice spot overlooking the sea, and watch the sunset as you scarf down those delicious burritos!
2. Fisherman’s Restaurant
Located at Ban Tai Pier, this gem has lots of fans for a reason. For folks who love seafood, this place is a keeper. It can get fully booked though, especially during peak season, so try booking in advance. Or why not visit during low season and have their cozy beach front to yourselves? Recommended for couples, families, and foodies, don’t leave without trying their yellow crab curry and king prawns. They might just change your life!
3. Ristorante Rimini
This little bungalow at Chaloklam Beach is a great find if you’re craving for great Italian cuisine halfway across the world. Thanks to their Italian chef, you can feel at home while filling yourself up with their homemade fettuccine and ravioli. Not only is the food reasonably-priced, the atmosphere is friendly, and all ingredients – especially the seafood – are fresh. Just make sure you leave room for dessert.
4. SOHO
Beers and burgers in Koh Phangan? Why not! If you and your friends have been missing that football game, there’s no better place to catch up than this bar and restaurant just opposite Phantip Night Market and food court at Thong Sala. While waiting for your order, you can entertain yourself by playing darts, pool, or foosball. You can also complement your cheeseburger with a nice drink from their amazing draft beer selection.
5. JJ’s Bar & Grill
Combine your love of good Thai food with the island’s famous sunsets here. Even if you’re not staying at the resort, their cooking should give you enough reason to visit. You can have your Burmese salad and Masaman curry served on their lounge area overlooking the beach. Once you’re full, you can rest on one of their hammocks as you ponder over your next meal. Should you order the Penang curry, or perhaps try their famous Tom Yum Goong?
6. The Mason Arms
Whether you’re feeling homesick, or just need a break from Thai cuisine, then let your feet take you to this British restaurant right at Thong Sala. The place features an authentic English pub vibe inside and out. They have everything from the staple fish and chips, probably the best lamb shank in the island, and an unforgettable Sunday roast. You don’t just eat here – this is your ‘home away from home’.
7. Friends Cafe
Surprise – now you and your friends can sample some traditional Russian cuisine while enjoying a holiday on the tropical island of Koh Phangan! This cozy cafe can be found at Baan Tai Road and serves up amazing homemade Pelmeni (Russian dumplings). Should you find yourself in the area, don’t forget to pair their Borsch with garlic bread. You might just keep coming back for more!
8. Peppercorn
There’s probably nothing more romantic than juicy, medium rare steak for dinner. If you’ve been hankering for that while on vacation, then look no further than this little restaurant at Haad Salad. While service may be a bit slow (the owner and chef takes time to customize and cook each meal to perfection), you won’t be disappointed. What are you waiting for? Sample their steaks, cheese platter, or homemade apple cake with fresh cream today!
9. Yukinoya
Located at the second floor of Anantara Hotel, this Asian restaurant will give you a taste of Japan right at Koh Phangan. Be amazed as the chef prepares Teppanyaki right in front of you. Delight your entire palate with fresh sushi and sashimi – all prepared with care. After their generous servings, you may want to wash it all down with sake.
10. Cafe 2401 and Guesthouse
Eat here for the good food, but stay for the great service and amazing views. Get a taste of the traditional with their Massaman curry and pineapple rice. Dine al fresco as you watch the waves at Ban Tai. Then dream of your next adventure while sipping on their refreshing Tom Yam Siam cocktail. Whether you’re in the mood for Indian cuisine or an all-day breakfast, they’ve got it covered.
Koh Phangan isn’t just for beach lovers – foodies will be amazed at the wide range of gastronomic choices available here, too. From vegetarian dishes to juicy steak dinners, Italian to Russian cooking, there’s definitely something for everyone. But don’t just take our word for it. Come here and treat your taste buds to an International fanfare!
