Koh Phangan in Thailand is synonymous to weekly parties and thrill-seeking backpackers. But there’s a lot more to the island than the infamous Full Moon party.
Aside from laying on the beach all day or partying until the sun comes up, there are loads of fun stuff you and your friends could be doing. It doesn’t have to cost you, too. As long as you know what you like, you can get the most out of your trip to Koh Phangan.
For a start, here are 10 awesome things to do – that doesn’t involve partying:
1. Mini Golf
What’s more exciting than a good round of mini golf on a humid day? Visit the only mini golf course in the area of Wok Tum (between Koh Phangan hospital and the island’s oldest temple, Wat Khao Noi) and try to score in any of their 12 wacky but challenging holes.
2. Slip and Fly
Are you an adrenaline junkie? Or maybe you’re looking for a cure for that hangover? Then head on over to the ‘Slip N Fly’ at Chaloklum, Madeuwan Road for an exclusive waterpark day party you won’t soon forget. The park features two 40-meter long slides with a 45-degree elevation ramp at the end to send you flying high!
It’s perfect for thrill-seekers or those who want a totally unique Instagram photo. But book early – because they only open about 15-23 days in a month.
3. Chase Waterfalls
If you’re tired of the beach, you can always go trekking to check out the many majestic waterfalls in Koh Phangan. There’s Sramanora waterfalls, Phaeng, Thaan Prapaad, Thaan Sadet, Wangsai, Paradise, and Thaan Prawes, just to name a couple.
But if you’re pressed for time, a visit to Than Sadet waterfalls is a must. Not only is the view to die for, it’s also important for the Thai people, because the initials of King Rama V are carved on a rock near the mouth of the river where the waterfall goes into the sea.
4. Explore the Island via Motorbike
Koh Phangan’s laidback atmosphere is perfect for going out and exploring on your own. As long as you have your license, you can rent a motorbike or scooter. Be sure to follow basic safety rules (e.g. always wear a helmet and no speeding) and you should live to tell the tale.
Ride towards either Haad Son or Haad Yao for some amazing views and you’ll know why it’s always better to take the road less traveled.
5. Take Up Archery Lessons
Who would’ve thought that you can enjoy archery even while on vacation? If you love this sport, come on down to the archery range located on the main road between Thong Sala and the fishing village Chaloklam.
The First Bow & Arrow Club Koh Phangan is definitely one-of-a-kind and has been in operation since 2005. So you could rest easy knowing you’d be getting lessons from experts.
6. Yoga, Meditation, Spa, Massage
They say there’s nothing like pampering on a tropical island. So why not get your fill at the many yoga, massage centers, and resorts at Koh Phangan?
Take your pick from countless pampering options that are not only good for the body, but for your soul as well. Create your own yoga packages at The Yoga Retreat, or try detox programs from The Sanctuary.
7. Visit Mu Ko Ang Thong National Marine Park
This group of islands is an absolute treat for folks who love camping, hiking, snorkeling, kayaking, and more. Get there by riding a speed boat or safari boat either from Koh Phangan or Koh Samui. Then, it’s all a matter of enjoying 42 tropical islands famous for their virgin forests, exotic animals, and rich corals.
Feel like the backpackers of ‘The Beach’ when you spend the night at Ang Thong Marine Park.
8. Dive Down Deep
If you’re more of a water baby, then you can go snorkelling or diving. For divers, Sail Rock located between the islands of Koh Phangan and Ko Tao comes highly recommended for both pros and beginners. Best diving conditions are during the months of April to October, so get those flippers ready!
9. Taste or Cook Authentic Thai Cuisine
Treat your taste buds by sampling cheap but yummy treats at the Thong Sala night market. Pick from a diverse range of choices such as sushi, BBQ meats, fried potatoes, pad thai, and even fresh falafel. For about 5$, you get a filling meal that usually comes with beer.
Want to learn how to make authentic Thai food instead? They’ve got that covered, too. Try C&M Cooking Class at Srithanu Village for fun, private cooking classes. Take these lessons home with you and surprise friends and family with your amazing Thai cooking knowledge!
10. Take on Challenge Phangan
Are you familiar with the TV show ‘Wipeout’? Well, this is Koh Phangan’s version – but with meals and drinks afterwards.
Get pumped throughout their obstacle course comprising of a rope swing, stepping stones, monkey bars, rolling barrels, balance beams, and the notoriously tricky big red balls! Beat the clock and see your name up on the leader boards. Even if you lose, the least you’ll be is wet but happy.
What do you think? Any of these sound enticing to you? Head on over to Koh Phangan and create your own adventure. Who knows, maybe you’ll end up getting over a fear, or trying something new. When it comes to all the fun things to see and do on this lovely island, the sky’s the limit!
